Students’ artwork on exhibit today
The public is invited to an art exhibit from 2 to 4 p.m. today featuring the creative works of Southwest Colorado Community College – East Campus students from the spring semester “Water Color II” and “Drawing I” classes.
Select works from students of Mary Frey and Doug Pfliger will be featured in the Art Room, the GoZone and the second-floor hallway of the Commons Building, 701 Camino del Rio.
All presently enrolled SCCC students also are invited to attend, and scholarships will be awarded.

‘Vagina Monologues’ to be done in Spanish
Sexual Assault Services Organization will sponsor a free performance of the “Vagina Monologues” in Spanish at 7 p.m. today at the Henry Strater Theatre in the Strater Hotel at 699 Main Ave. The performance is SASO’s final event for Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Eve Ensler’s “Vagina Monologues” is made up of monologues read by a diverse mix of women. Every monologue somehow relates to the vagina, be it through sex, love, rape, menstruation, mutilation, masturbation, birth, orgasm, the variety of names for the vagina or simply as a physical aspect of the body.
SASO’s Council on Sexual Violence Prevention members and community volunteers will be performing the play.
Participants in the Monologues will include: Marisela Church, Elvia Andrea Dyer, Maria Cristina Gabriel, Wendolyne Warner, Randi Foster, Beth Cantrell, Nicole Mosher, Mariel Sholes, Darlene Clayton, Dee Dee de Haro-Brown, Erin Olinger, Ximena Palomares, Wendy Vega and Olivia De Pablo.

Local artist’s paintings on display at airport
The works of Durango artist Don Cooke are on display in the departure lounge at the Durango-La Plata County Airport through June 30.
Cooke is a local physician who has been painting seriously since 1997. He works primarily outside, en plein air, as well as figure painting and portraiture.
His work has been juried into the International Association of Pastel Societies show in Santa Fe, and he won the People’s Choice award and Juror’s award at the New Mexico Pastel Society show in 2002.
He has exhibited with the Four Corners Plein Air Painters. At the show in Farmington in March 2005, he won the Juror’s Award, the Award of Excellence and People’s Choice.
His paintings also were juried into the Scottsdale Artists School Best and Brightest show in 2010.
TOP to screen Cunningham biopic
The organizers of TOP, the local juried fashion show and auction, will present the documentary “Bill Cunningham New York” on Thursday at the Back Space Theatre, 1120 Main Ave.
Two showings, at 4 and 6:30 p.m., will be preceded by “It’s Hard to TOP Durango,” a four-minute local film about Durango’s fashion scene as chronicled by local photographers Kyla Jenkinson and Wesley Sebern. Their focus is paparazzi-style and posed images of Durangoans in their finest tops, from puffy parkas to thin camisoles that allow for optimal exhibitions of fine body art.
Octogenarian Bill Cunningham is best known for his regular columns “On the Street” and “Evening Hours” in The New York Times covering fashion trends and high society. The 2010 award-winning documentary, directed by Richard Press, pays tribute not only to the man but to individualists of all ages.

State agency to offer grant sessions
Colorado Creative Industries, a division of the state Office of Economic Development, will hold a grant information session to provide training for the division’s largest grant program, Colorado Creates.
The session will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Durango Discovery Museum, 1333 Camino del Rio.
The mission of Colorado Creative Industries (formerly the Colorado Council on the Arts) is to promote, support and expand the creative industries to drive Colorado’s economy, grow jobs and enhance its quality of life.
CCI staff will present an overview of the agency’s programs and services and offer training about how to apply for a Colorado Creates grant. Grants range from $4,000 to $10,000 and may be for either general operating support or specific projects.
Guidelines for the 2012-2013 Colorado Creates grant program are available on the CCI website at www.coloradocreativeindustries.org, along with the link to the online grant system. The grant application deadline is June 21.
Grant applicants for Colorado Creates must be nonprofit organizations, departments of Colorado public colleges or universities, or government agencies. Applicants must have been providing public arts or cultural heritage programs in Colorado for at least three years by the application deadline.

Artists invited to sell at market
Durango Friends of the Arts will hold its inaugural Artists Market fundraiser July 21 at the Edgemont picnic grounds on County Road 240.
There will be a limit of 50 spaces available and the cost for non-DFA members is $35. Artists may share a space, but an application is required for each artist.
Reservations are on a first-come, first-save basis. This will not be a juried show. All artists in the community in all media are welcome to participate.
Deadline for applicants is May 25. All participants this year will have priority for next year’s show. Applications are available online at www.durangofriends.org and at Art Supply House in Town Plaza.
