Sister, sister

Herald Staff Report

The Durango High School girls soccer team opened the weekend road trip with a 2-0 victory at Montrose on Friday afternoon.

Brooke Milliet scored in the second minute to give Durango a 1-0 lead. She took a long through ball over the Montrose defense from sister Lauren Milliet.

The Demons collected their second goal with 10 minutes to play in the first half.

The goal came on an indirect free kick. Brooke Milliet touched the ball to sister Lauren Milliet in a reversal of the first-goal scoring sequence.

Karlee Mulkey had the shutout in goal for Durango.

“Karlee made a couple of good saves, and she had another clean sheet (shutout),” Durango head coach Aaron Eldridge said.

He said Montrose played a high defensive line, particularly early in the match.

The Demons had several solid goal-scoring chances early, he said.

“I felt like we could have had more (goals),” Eldridge said.

“But we were sharp,” he said of the overall play by the Demons.

“Montrose is really direct (on offense). Overall, we handled things. I think we played a smart, organized game,” Eldridge said.

The Demons (8-4-1 overall, 6-2-0 in the Southwestern League) will continue their road trip with a 10 a.m. match today against Grand Junction Central.

Montrose fell to 5-6-1 overall, 4-3-0 in the SWL.
