Bayfield student doodles for Google

BAYFIELD – A Bayfield seventh-grader is one of 50 students from across the country whose drawings are in the running to grace Google’s home page for a day.

Jimmy Ferguson was among 114,000 students who submitted drawings for this year’s Doodle 4 Google contest. The 5-year-old contest challenged kindergarten through 12th-graders to submit an artistic rendition of Google’s logo, called a “Google doodle,” around the theme “If I could travel in time, I’d visit ... ” Jimmy was named the finalist for Colorado at a schoolwide assembly Wednesday at Bayfield Middle School.

Jimmy drew his technology-inspired drawing in about 30 minutes after school one day, he said. His art teacher told him about the contest, and his mother encouraged him to submit his artwork. He was the only Bayfield student to enter the competition.

Jimmy has always been a doodler, and he is known for filling the margins of notebooks with drawings. It helps him concentrate in class, he said.

As the state’s finalist, Google will fly Jimmy and his family to New York City later this month. His artwork will be displayed alongside that of the other finalists in a special exhibit at the New York Public Library.

Jimmy also is in the running to become the national Doodle 4 Google winner. The first-place drawing will be the “Google doodle” for a day on Google’s home page, and the artist will receive a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 technology grant for his or her school. The national winner is selected by a public vote.

Google employees fanned out across the country Wednesday to recognize the finalist in every state.

“(The contest) is a great way to engage young people and for them to learn about Google, art and technology,” said Michaela Prescott, a director of marketing. “At Google, we’re all about creativity, innovation and thinking really big.”
