Longtime Durango resident Joel E. Buchanan died of chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder and coronary artery disease Friday, April 27, 2012, in Durango. He was 64.
Mr. Buchanan was born to Horace and Helen (Stewart) Buchanan on Nov. 17, 1947, in Denver. His father died in 1951 when he was a little boy, and his mother, Helen Leonardelli, died just two months ago.
He served in the Navy from 1965 to 1968 during the Vietnam War.
In 1969, he married Alice Ruth McCurry in Farmington. The marriage ended in divorce. The couple remarried in 1980 in Farmington. That marriage also ended in divorce.
Mr. Buchanan held numerous jobs as a custodian, in food preparation and as a surveyor. He was also a lineman and worked at Mercy Hospital.
“He enjoyed sitting in the backyard, drinking iced tea and listening to music,” his family said, “and just being ornery. He had a passion for stargazer lilies.”
Mr. Buchanan is survived by his daughter, Tiffany F. Buchanan, of Durango; son, Art Park, of Durango; stepchildren Dawn Irons of Bloomfield, N.M., and Paul Irons of Chandler, Ariz.; brother, Jay Buchanan, of Rifle; three granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place. A private service will be held at a later date.
