The Bayfield High School track and field teams piled up the points Saturday at the annual Terry Allen Invitational in Pagosa Springs.
The BHS girls won the meet with 133 points to 122 for runner-up Dolores. Pagosa Springs was third (78).
The BHS boys finished second (135˝) to host Pagosa Springs (143). Mancos was third (73˝). Del Norte finished fourth (56˝).
“The weather was very cooperative, and we did well,” Bayfield head coach Sherri Kimball said.
“The relays did really well, and the throwers and vaulters had a good day.”
Junior TJ Pazell led the Bayfield boys with two first-place finishes and a third (shot put). Pazell jumped 40-5˝ to win the triple jump. He went 19-6 to win the long jump.
Pazell also was third in the shot (41-2), an event won by teammate Michael Hawkins (45-8).
Bayfield senior Zach Stone teamed with Aaron Velasquez, Keith Wickman and Allec Rodriguez to win the 4x100 relay (46.04).
Velasquez won the discus Saturday (133-1˝). He’s thrown 147 feet in earlier meets.
Luke Webb of the Wolverines won the boys 3,200 meters Saturday (11:08), and he finished third in the open 400 meters (53.15).
Wickman won the 200-meter dash in 23.85.
Joe Hetrick of the Wolverines was second in the 1,600.
Pole vaulter John Arnold of Bayfield also finished second (12-9).
The BHS boys also picked up points from a third-place finish in the 4x400 (Robert Westbrook, Nate Tate, Webb and Rodriguez) and a third in the 4x200 (Steele Allred, Arnold, Wickman and Webb).
Candace Shaw and Haley Goddard led the BHS girls with a 1-2 finish in the discus. Shaw threw 118-3˝; Goddard threw 112-4˝.
Shaw added a runner-up in the shot put with a throw of 22-1˝. Teammate Samantha Espinosa was third (32-7˝).
Jessica Cusick of BHS was second in the girls 800 (2:29). Teammate Katy Funkhouser was second in the 1,600 in 5:44.
Three BHS girls relay teams finished second Saturday: 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400.
The 4x100 team featured Destini McGhehey, Micaela Knickerbocker, Ashlyn Schulder and Amy Roach.
The 4x200 squad was Shaw, McGhehey, Schulder and Goddard.
The Bayfield 4x400 team consisted of Brittany Hunter, Maggie Zink, Haley Clarke and Cusick.
The BHS team of Darby Boggess, Danielle Miller, Zink and Clarke also finished third in the 4x800 relay.
Jessie Roukema of the Wolverines added a third-place result in the high jump (5-0).
BHS will host the five-team Intermountain League Championships on Saturday at Wolverine Country Stadium. Bayfield, Alamosa, Pagosa Springs, Centauri and Monte Vista are scheduled to compete.
