Miller to hold bike, walk week
Miller Middle School will begin a bike and walk to school week Monday.
Students are encouraged to bike or walk to school or get on the move at home.
All students who keep track of their activity will be eligible to enter a May 18 drawing.
A bike will be given to each grade level winner. Other prizes will include helmets, water bottles and more.
Durango school board to meet Tuesday
The Durango School District 9-R School Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the board room of the administration building.

School districts seek local beef bids
School districts in Southwest Colorado are working together to purchase beef from Colorado ranchers for their lunch programs.
An invitation to bid for the 2013 Farm-to-School Beef has been announced by Krista Garand, supervisor of student nutrition for the Durango School District. Local beef suppliers are welcome to bid through 2 p.m. May 25.

Registration accepted for summer academy
Registration for Durango School District 9-R’s Summer Academy closes May 21.

The academy provides a quality educational enrichment experience at minimal cost. Classes will have a minimum class size of six students and a maximum of 14.

DHS to offer summer basketball camp
Durango High School will host its Individual Skills Summer Basketball Camp from June 12 to June 14 in Gym 1 of the high school.
Boys and girls in grades third to fifth will meet from 9 a.m. to noon, and sixth- to eighth-grade students will meet from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.
The coaching staff of the Durango boys basketball team will host the camp, which will provide children with basic skills. Fundamentals included are defense, shooting, passing, ball handling and rebounding.
The cost is $50. The deadline to sign up is June 2.

The Parent Teacher Organization’s Hawaiian themed dinner and dance will begin at 6 p.m. May 18. Fifth-grade students will perform “Ballroom Dancing,” then there will be a family dance ending at 8 p.m. Students must be accompanied by an adult. The Florida Mesa Madness yard sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 19 in the school’s parking lot.
The “International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme Parent Luncheon” will be held at 11:30 a.m. May 18 in the Gifted and Talented Room.
A truck load of woodchips delivered at 10 a.m. May 19. The school needs community members to bring a rake or wheelbarrow to help spread the chips.

Summer music, sports programs offered
Stillwater Foundation will offer summer music and sports programs beginning June 11.
Music programs will include beginning percussion for ages 6 and older; vocal performance camps for ages 11 to 15; intermediate band camp for ages 10 to 14; and an advanced band camp for ages 12 to 18.
Sports camps will include half-day summer camps for ages 8 to 12; coed T-ball and soccer for ages 5 to 7; dodge ball for ages 8 to 10; baseball/soccer training camps for ages 6 to 8, 9 to 11, 12 to 14; and flag football for ages 8 to 12. Individual, team and family gym memberships also are available.
Nominations sought for youth, youth groups
Nominations are sought for youth and youth groups to be considered for the National Philanthropy Day in Colorado Awards.
The outstanding youth award is presented to an individual youth volunteer, 18 and younger, who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to the promotion of philanthropy and volunteerism through work in the community. The winner will be awarded a $2,500 scholarship.

Pro Cycling Challenge group to visit schools
The USA Pro Cycling Challenge Local Education Committee will visit area schools to help with bike rodeos, speak at assemblies or drop off handbooks for students.
Inside the handbooks will be instructions about participating in the cycling challenge. Each school will have the opportunity to win a bike rack.
By visiting www.saferoutescolorado.org, students can sign up for a free account to track the number of miles ridden. When a school rides an equivalent of the 683 total race miles, the school will choose from a selection of bike racks for installation before the 2012-2013 school year.
Additionally, a community bike rodeo will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Fort Lewis College softball field where kids can learn bike safety skills, proper helmet fitting, bike etiquette and more. There also will be guest appearances from professional cyclists. Children who bring a log of total miles ridden will receive a medal.

Kitchen-Based Learning course to be offered
Kitchen-Based Learning, an environmental and sustainablity literacy professional development course, will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from July 17 and Aug. 9 at the Animas Valley Grange and the Waterfall Community Garden.
This course is open to all kindergarten to 12th-grade educators. The cost is $100 to earn continuing education hours and a certificate of completion, or $165 for three graduate credit hours from Adams State College.
Participants will learn about sustainability education while fostering appreciation for the natural world through food, garden and cooking. By the end of the course, participants will have collaboratively developed a final portfolio of recipes, resources and lesson plans to integrate and support existing curriculum.

Child care provider classes scheduled
The Early Childhood Council of La Plata County, in collaboration with the Southwest Office of Child Care Resource & Referral, will offer classes for people interested in becoming licensed home child care providers in the state of Colorado.
Prelicensing will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 9 and 16. The cost is $50.
St. Paul’s preschool accepting enrollment
St. Paul’s Lutheran Preschool is accepting enrollment in its 2012 Summer Fun Program, which will begin June 4, and its fall 2012 preschool classes.

Driver education classes available
Four Corners Safety Association will offer the next 30-hour driver’s education classes from June 4 to 7, June 25 to 28, and Aug. 13 to 16.
The association also will conduct a class in Ignacio from July 16 to 19. The cost for the class plus the six hours of driving required by the state is $385.

The Durango Discovery museum will host “Spark” volunteer training from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the museum, 1333 Camino del Rio.
