Whalen a 3rd alternate

DHS girls golf finishes fifth at Western Slope Regionals

She’s not all the way in, but she’s close.

Lexi Whalen lost a playoff for the second alternate position, but the Durango High School golfer still is an alternate for this year’s CHSAA Class 4A Girls Golf State Championships.

During the playoff, Whalen, a senior, told DHS coach Kirk Rawles that she shot her weight: 103. Rawles said he joked that all she needs to do, then, is lose 20 pounds.

Durango, led by Whalen, finished fifth at the Western Slope Regional Tournament on Tuesday at Dos Rios Golf Club in Gunnison, while Rifle won the tournament with a 227 team score.

“The course played tough and just took a toll on girls (Tuesday),” Rawles said. “It was just one of those days where none of the girls could get anything going.”

Montrose was second at 287, Aspen third at 310, Moffat County fourth at 317 and DHS and Glenwood Springs finished in a tie for fifth at 324.

Whalen’s 103 was two strokes off the state-qualifying cut. She was followed by teammates Haleigh Lyon at 106, Natalie Lyon at 115 and Brook Kniffin at 119.

Rawles said the course obstacles – “lakes, rivers and everything else” – made it frustrating, and the girls weren’t able to chart their way around it the way they did a couple of weeks ago.

“It just started going south, and they couldn’t link the holes together,” Rawles said.

Taylor Walter of Rifle shot an 86 to win the Western Slope regional.
