The Back Space Theatre

(1120 Main Ave., 259-7940)

The Lady.HH Another film chronicling the mess that is Myanmar/Burma. This one’s a biopic about Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, whose father’s assassination opened the door for decades of military junta repression. Rated R.

Gaslight Cinema

(102 Fifth St. Next to the railroad depot, 247-8133)

Chimpanzee. (No Ebert rating) In which we meet Oscar, a baby chimp who frolics in the African jungle without a care in the world. Then he gets a taste of the real world. Rated G.

Bully.HHH An important documentary that follows five families whose kids are affected by bullying, some to the extent of suicide. It’s an eye-opener. (See review this page.) Rated PG-13.

Durango Stadium 9

(Next to Durango Mall, 247-9799)

Dark Shadows.HH½ It’s loosely based on the old TV show, but not really: Johnny Depp stars as a Maine man cursed by a witch who then wakes up 200 years later as a vampire in 1972. Kinda funny, kinda horror-y. Rated PG-13.

The Dictator. (Opens Wednesday) Sacha Baron Cohen is in his element lampooning the military strongman Gadhafi/Saddam types. Rated R.

Marvel’s The Avengers.HHH (In standard and digital 3-D with surcharge) It takes a lot of superheroes to save the planet. Good thing there are a lot of superheroes out of work. Rated PG-13.

The Five-Year Engagement. (No Ebert rating) Not much to add to the title – a couple gets engaged and finds all kinds of reasons to keep it that way. Rated R.

The Pirates! Band of Misfits. (No Ebert rating. In standard and digital 3-D with surcharge) I got as far as “Laugh your booty off” on the film’s official website and decided to call it good. Rated PG.

The Lucky One.HH½ A Marine finds a photo of a woman in a combat zone and miraculously finds her upon his return to the states. What are the odds? Rated PG-13.

The Hunger Games.HHH Best-seller hits the big screen; young folks in the future are forced to compete in Roman-esque fights to death. Fun. Rated PG-13.
