Applications sought for district judge

The 6th Judicial District Nominating Commission will meet June 12 at the La Plata County Courthouse, 1060 East Second Ave., to interview and select nominees for appointment by the governor to the office of district judge for the 6th Judicial District.

To be eligible, an applicant must be a qualified elector of the district and must have been admitted to the practice of law in Colorado for five years.

The initial term of office is a provisional term of two years; thereafter, the incumbent district judge has a term of six years.

Application forms are available from Justice Allison H. Eid, 101 W. Colfax, Suite 800, Denver, CO 80202, and Eric Hogue, 1060 East Second Ave., Durango, CO 81301. Applications also are available at www.courts.state.co.us/Careers/Judge.cfm. The application and a copy stored as a PDF must be filed by 4 p.m. May 24. People may suggest a candidate by letter submitted to a member of the nominating commission, with a copy to the ex-officio chairman, by 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Electronics recycling event to take place

The city of Durango will host its Electronics Recycling event to collect unwanted electronics for recycling from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Durango Recycling Center, 710 Tech Center Drive.

The cost for disposal ranges from $15-$25 for televisions and monitors; $5 for CPUs, scanners and fax machines; large office equipment charged at 25 cents per pound; game consoles, DVD, VCR, CD players and stereo equipment at $3. Other items including keyboards, mice and cellphones will be collected for $1 each, and miscellaneous cords will be collected for free.

For a schedule of fees,visit www.durangogov.org. People bringing large volumes need to call 375-5004 to schedule an appointment and bring an inventory list. Large-volume drops will be scheduled for Friday only.

Florida Cemetery Association to meet

The Florida Cemetery Association will meet at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the old Florida Baptist Church on County Road 225 adjacent to the cemetery.

Durango DEVO to host Bike Swap

Durango DEVO, a nonprofit group that is developing lifelong cyclists, will host its Bike Swap from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Chapman Hill, 486 Florida Road.

There will be gently used mountain bikes, road bikes, kid’s bikes, cruisers and gear. Local cyclists as well as Mountain Bike Specialist, Second Ave. Sports and Hassle Free Sports will have items at the swap.

People who are interested in selling items may drop them off from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Chapman Hill. Unsold equipment will need to be picked up from 8 a.m. to noon May 20. Equipment not claimed will be considered a donation to Durango DEVO.

Forest landowners presentation to be held

Forest landowners are invited to attend a Colorado State Forest Service workshop presented by Colorado Parks & Wildlife staff on the topic of “Managing Private Forest Lands for Wildlife Habitat” at 9 a.m. Friday in the Animas Room of the La Plata County Fairgrounds Extension Building, 2500 Main Ave.

The session will inform landowners of the habitat needs for various species of wildlife and to identify forest treatments that will meet goals for enhancing wildlife habitat. A field trip will take place after the discussion and will be completed by 12:30 p.m.
