Durango native Jeremiah Zachariah Rivas died Tuesday, May 8, 2012, in Ignacio from injuries suffered in a car accident. He was 24.
Mr. Rivas was born July 7, 1987, to Angel Rivas and Michael Mayer in Durango. He grew up in Durango and attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where he served as an altar boy. He later earned a GED after attending Durango High School.
Mr. Rivas worked at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad depot and The Bar D Chuckwagon.
He enjoyed traveling and took trips to Madera and Casas Grandes, Mexico, his family said. He was a quiet man with a good heart, they said.
Mr. Rivas is survived by his grandparents/guardians, Miguel and Mary S. Garcia, of Durango; brothers Raymond Ollier and Skylar Bowers, both of Durango; sister, Kailee Bowers, of Durango; son, Elijah Miguel, of Austin, Texas; mother and stepfather, Angel and Anthony Bowers, of Durango; as well as grandparents, a nephew, a niece and numerous aunts, uncles and other family members.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, 2012, at Hood Mortuary Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will occur at Greenmount Cemetery.
