Lemon Dam crash kills 1

A single-car accident Saturday night left one person dead and another seriously injured.

Both people involved in the accident, which occurred just before 8 p.m., were males younger than 18, said Colorado State Patrol Cpl. Heather Cobler.

The driver was traveling east in a 1991 Ford Explorer on County Road 243 off Forest Service Road 569, just past Lemon Dam, when he lost control of the vehicle and rolled off the right side of the road.

Both occupants were ejected from the vehicle; neither was wearing a seat belt, Cobler said.

The driver was transported to Mercy Regional Medical Center with serious injuries, and the passenger died on scene, she said.

La Plata County Deputy Coroner Jan Smith said she has not yet made a positive identification of the passenger, but hoped to do so by Wednesday. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, she said.

The case is under investigation. Authorities do not believe alcohol was a factor, Cobler said.

No charges have been made against the driver as of Sunday evening, Cobler said.
