Get taste of Durango downtown on Sunday

If you have any important downtown shopping to do, you might want to do it before this Sunday’s annual Taste of Durango.

Main Avenue will be closed between Eighth and 12th streets for the event, and organizers are expecting 10,000 people.

Attendees can sample food and drinks from 38 restaurants during the event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission to the event is free, but organizers are encouraging $1 donations per person at each of the four gates. All proceeds will go to Manna Soup Kitchen.

First National Bank of Durango and Skyy Spirits donated the quarter-million coins that are handed out to attendees at the gates. The restaurants can charge as much as they want for the samples, and attendees pay with the coins, which are worth $1.

The participating restaurants take the coins they collect to Guido’s Favorite Foods after the taste and get 50 cents per coin turned in to pay for food costs, said Sean Devereaux, chapter president of the Colorado Restaurant Association.

There will be gates to get coins and enter the taste at Eighth, Ninth, 10th and 12th streets along Main Avenue.

Attendees can go to the Ninth Street gate at 10 a.m. to get IDs checked and get coins ahead of time.
