Talk to address life at Basketmaker II site

The Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College will continue its series “Celebrating the Preservation of Our Natural and Cultural Heritage” with a talk about the prehistory of the Durango Basketmaker II population at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the center.

The center will present 10 years of FLC Archaeology Field School excavation and research at the Dark Mold site. Located north of Durango in the Animas Valley and near the Falls Creek Rock Shelters, the site thrived from 700 B.C. until A.D. 450.

Speakers Mona Charles and Dawn Mulhern will address the origin of these people, their culture, the hardships they faced and what happened to them.

Refreshments will be offered at 5:30 p.m., and the program will begin at 6 p.m.

Ignacio library announces events

The Ignacio Community Library, 470 Goddard Ave. in Ignacio, will host these programs:

An all-day seed exchange will take place Tuesday. Participants are invited to bring in excess or saved seeds and trade them in for new varieties.

The documentary “Strong!” will be shown at 10:30 a.m. and 2 and 5:30 p.m. Monday. The film chronicles the journey of weight lifter Cheryl Haworth. It explores popular notions of power, strength, beauty and health.

An “Essential Oils for First Aid” class with Marija Helt will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Durango Natural Foods, 575 East Eighth Ave.

PERA group to meet Wednesday

All state employees and state retirees are invited to attend the La Plata School and Public Employees Retirement Association/Colorado School and Public Employees Retirement Association meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

Composting class, seed exchange coming

A free composting class will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the meeting room of the Lavenia McCoy Public Library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive.

A representative from Durango Compost Co. will teach the class.

The library also will hold a plant exchange at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Vegetables, herbs, flowers and houseplants are welcome. Advance sign-up is appreciated but not required.

Bayfield library to show documentary

The Lavenia McCoy Public Library will show the documentary film “Bag It” from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at 395 Bayfield Center Drive in Durango.

In the documentary, a man makes a resolution to stop using plastic bags at the grocery store. The screening will be followed by a discussion.
