After Friday’s preliminaries, four individual swims and two team swims gave members of the Durango High School boys swim team a chance to hit the pool Saturday – the second day of the CHSAA Class 4A Boys Swimming State Championships at Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in Thornton.
The 200-yard medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams, manned by Jesse Rubenstein, Austin Bullock, Carl Sallee and Colby White, finished 10th and 12th overall, respectively.
The 200 medley was second in the consolation finals, the spot for swimmers that finish prelims between ninth and 16th.
DHS finished fourth in the 400 free relay.
A 10th-place finish in the 200 medley relay and 15th place in the 400 freestyle relay put the two Durango teams in the consolation finals.
Each team cut time from their seeded time (the clocked time at which they qualified for the state championships), with the 200 medley team shaving almost a full second to finish in 1 minute, 44.33 seconds.
The free relay finished in 3:29.96.
Rubenstein finished 13th in the 200 free and 15th in the 500 free to earn two Saturday swims. The sophomore finished third in the 200 free consolation final and 11th overall and was 16th overall in the 100 free.
Bullock shaved more than two seconds off his seeded time in the 100 breaststroke preliminary, finishing 10th in 1:01.52, and he cut more than a second off his seeded time in the 100 free, finishing 13th in the prelims.
Bullock was second in the consolation race and 10th in the state in the 100 breaststroke. He finished seventh in the consolation race and 15th overall in the 100 free.
