A 20-year-old Durango man was arrested Saturday night for suspicion of damaging the driver’s side mirrors of at least 13 cars along the east side of West Second Avenue.

Durango police were dispatched to West Second Avenue and 27th Street about 11:50 p.m. Saturday after receiving a call about a man possibly breaking into cars, according to an arrest affidavit.

Police saw a driver’s side mirror broken off a silver Ford Taurus lying on the ground and damage on 12 other cars along the street. The total damage is estimated at $2,400.

The man – Wiley McAllister – had run from the area and was found in the west alley of the 2900 block of Main Avenue.

Police smelled alcohol on McAllister. Police also found a .380 automatic handgun in his underwear and four rounds for the gun in a pants pocket during a search. He does not have a concealed-carry permit for the gun, the affidavit said.

McAllister told police he was drinking at a party in the area of 18th Street and Main Avenue when he got into an argument with a girl. He got upset, left the party, and he began kicking mirrors on the parked cars.

He consented to a breath test and had a breath-alcohol content level of 0.169.

McAllister was arrested for felony criminal mischief, in addition to unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon, prohibited use of a weapon and illegal possession and consumption of alcohol.

The criminal mischief charge is a felony because the damage was in excess of $1,000.
