A 75-year-old Durango man died last weekend after his car slid off a road in rural San Juan County.
The incident occurred about 3 p.m. Saturday on San Juan County Road 40, also known as Hotel Draw Road, between Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort and Rico.
William Couch got out of the car and had been walking along the road before other drivers saw him lying on the road.
They left to get medical help, but he was dead when they returned about 3:40 p.m., said John Jacobs, deputy sheriff with the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office.
Couch was seen earlier in the day and was offered help, which he refused, Jacobs said.
Authorities don’t believe he was walking to get help.
An autopsy was performed Monday, but authorities are still investigating the cause of death, Jacobs said. No foul play is suspected, but Jacobs said he thinks Couch’s death was a mixture of his age, the high altitude and dehydration.
