Lawmakers must uphold Constitution for all

Republican Speaker of the House Frank McNulty states that there are more important things to do than give civil rights to a fraction of his constituents (Herald, May 15). Those rights are guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States.

I don’t care what Obama’s or Romney’s views are, I am concerned about ignoring the rights of someone different from me through no fault of his or her own. Their rights are granted by the Constitution that elected officials take an oath to uphold. Who, then, is next: me for speaking out? McNulty doesn’t have to listen to me or thee, just abide by the Constitution.
