The new Welcome Center on the corner of Eighth Street and Main Avenue, in the former Durango Music space, opened its doors Thursday despite ongoing construction. Designed to be a central, one-stop resource for tourists and locals alike, the Welcome Center is ready to give directions, offer eating and lodging recommendations and sell tickets for upcoming shows and events, said spokeswoman Anne Klein.
The Durango Area Tourism Office, Fort Lewis College, Business Improvement District and the city of Durango collaborated to make the center a more visual experience than its predecessor in Santa Rita Park. Video screens and large photos cover each wall, showcasing the area’s many natural and man-made attractions. The Santa Rita Park office will remain open and offer basic information, as well as RV parking.
Content-wise, the new Welcome Center is fully operational. Some aesthetics, however – countertops, artwork and some multimedia displays – are still a work in progress. Klein estimated the work will be finished in several weeks.
