Raymond Meyer, the father of Durango resident Kathy Jones, died Friday, May 25, 2012, at Crane’s Roost in Aztec. He was 89.
Known as “Ray,” he was born to Henry and Emily (Hohman) Meyer on Aug. 2, 1922, in Hoyleton, Ill. He was one of nine children and grew up in Hoyleton and Posey, lll.
During World War II, Mr. Meyer was drafted into the Army Air Corps and was trained as an airplane mechanic. He was stationed in Hawaii and England before his honorable discharge.
Mr. Meyer continued to work as a civilian aircraft mechanic for the Air Force until his retirement from Williams Air Force Base in Mesa, Ariz., in 1977.
In 1950, he married Frances Von Hatten in Breese, Ill., and they moved to Phoenix, where they raised their family.
The Meyers family enjoyed their times together at their cabin that Mr. Meyer built in Heber, Ariz.
After Mrs. Meyer died in 1993, Mr. Meyer moved to Aztec in 2000 to be near family. In Aztec, he met Arlene Jacobs, and the couple married in 2002 in Aztec.
“Ray was a gifted woodworker and enjoyed bird hunting, skeet shooting and cookouts,” his family said. “He was a clever joke teller and told stories that everyone enjoyed. Ray never met a stranger and had a magnetic personality with his many jokes and life stories.”
He also enjoyed spending time with his faithful dog, Buttons.
Mr. Meyer was preceded in death by his first wife of 43 years, Frances Meyer; and second wife, Arlene Jacobs-Meyer.
He is survived by his daughters Kathy Jones of Durango and Beverly Todd of Farmington; sister Selma “Tommie” King of Carlyle, Ill.; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 31, 2012, at Hood Mortuary, 1261 East Third Ave. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, June 1, 2012, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 500 N. Mesa Verde Ave., in Aztec. Burial will take place afterward at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Farmington.
