A former Durango resident sought for child molestation was arrested Wednesday in Oklahoma on a similar charge.
The local cases came to light while Christopher Alan Jones, 37, was on the run after escaping from Durango’s Hilltop House correctional facility early last year, La Plata County Sheriff’s investigator Tom Cowing said Friday.
Jones, who lived in Durango from 2004 to 2011, was at Hilltop for vehicular assault in 2010, Cowing said.
While Jones was eluding authorities, two sisters, now 20 and 16 years old, told investigators that Jones molested them starting when they were 7 years old, Cowing said. The molestation lasted into their early teens, the victims said.
The alleged molestation occurred in both in La Plata and Pottawatomie (Okla.) counties, Cowing said.
Jones was arrested in Pottawatomie County on suspicion of molesting a girl there and for the La Plata County escape.
Cowing would like to talk to anyone with information about Jones, particularly if it involves sexual contact with children. He can be reached at 382-7045.
Jones probably will face charges in Oklahoma and then be extradited to La Plata County to face two counts of sexual assault on a child and escape from a correctional faility, Cowing said.
It would be determined later how and where he would serve time, Cowing said.
