Jesi Steward

Jesi Steward

California resident Jesi Steward died Tuesday, May 22, 2012, near Hesperus. She was 65. The cause of death was vehicular homicide when the Steward motorcycle was hit by a car. Mrs. Steward’s husband of 44 years, Frank, also was killed in the incident.

The Stewards were en route to Kansas City, where their son Frank Steward III was retiring after 20 years in the Army and graduating from college at the same time.

Mrs. Steward was born to Cy and Evelyn Newman on March 28, 1947, in New Orleans. After attending Fresno State College in California, she earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology with a minor Russian from the University of Maryland.

On Sept. 3, 1967, she married Frank Steward Jr., in Fresno.

Mrs. Steward worked in media most of her life, primarily radio. Her last position before her retirement was as an infomercial buyer for the Outdoor Channel.

The family moved to many places because Mr. Steward worked as a civilian in personnel for the Air Force, including living in Yokota, Japan, from 1988 to 1990.

Mrs. Steward was active in Al-Anon in both California and Nevada, editing the organization’s publication and holding numerous positions in the group. She also helped found an Alateen chapter in the Lake Tahoe area.

She was an ardent fan of the San Francisco Giants, an avid bridge player and loved Lake Tahoe, where the couple lived in Tahoe Vista on the California side. The Stewards also enjoyed traveling on their Harley-Davidson and had roamed over much of the country.

“Jesi always answered the phone with a cheery ‘Telephone,’” her sisters Laurie Coleman and Pat Newman said. “She would always find the positive in every situation. One phrase she would use was ‘It’s a cherry milkshake,’ and whenever she was ending a conversation, ‘See you in a minute!’”

Mrs. Steward is survived by her sons Frank Steward III, of Yakima, Wash., Adam Steward of Las Vegas and Eric Steward of Carmichael, Calif.; siblings Laurie Coleman and Rich Newman, both of Las Vegas, Dave Newman of Reno, Nev., Pat Newman of San Diego, Joe Newman of Indianapolis, Valerie Newman of Sierra Madre, Calif., Joe Newman of Indianapolis and Mike Newman of Fairfax, Va.; five granddaughters and one grandson.

A gathering will be held for the Stewards at noon Saturday, June 9, 2012, on the north shore of Lake Tahoe across from their home.
