Crews gain handle on X-rock Fire

Fire managers on Sunday pulled crews off of the X-rock Fire, which charred 4 acres at the base of Animas Mountain, near the 3800 block of Main Avenue.

The 21-member Juniper Valley Crew, from Buena Vista, mapped grids of the area Sunday, checking for hot spots inside and outside the fire perimeter, said Karola Hanks, a fire marshal with the Durango Fire & Rescue Authority.

Fire managers planned to consider the fire out as long as they didnít see any hot spots after 6 p.m. Sunday, Hanks said.

The Juniper Valley Crew is set to be released from the fire, and DFRA crews will continue to monitor the area throughout the week, Hanks said.

Hanks said X-rock Trail, which was closed throughout the weekend while crews worked on the fire, should be open today.

The fire began late Friday afternoon and was human-caused. The fire is currently being investigated.
