E-readers available for checkout at library

The Friends of the Durango Public Library recently provided 40 NOOK e-readers that are available for checkout by library patrons. They are preloaded with titles for subjects such as best-sellers, mystery series, business, Durango Literary Festival authors, children’s interactive books, fiction, nonfiction and more.

The NOOKs come ready to use with a cover, charger and user guide and can be checked out for two weeks with one renewal.

Adults can register at the library’s reference desk to check out NOOKs.

3-day photo workshop planned at Mesa Verde

The nonprofit Mesa Verde Museum Association will offer a three-day fall photography workshop for digital or film cameras led by photographer and professor emeritus Gene Balzer.

The workshop will be held October 12-14 and will be limited to 13 participants. It will begin at noon Oct. 12 and end the afternoon of Oct. 14.

Tuition includes three days of instruction, two nights in-park motel lodging at the Far View Lodge and all meals, including two dinners at the Metate Room Restaurant.

Workshop participants will visit sites around the park at times designed to capture ideal lighting conditions and will work on compositional skills. The group will visit some archaeological sites at hours when they’re closed to the general public and also will visit Mug House, a cliff dwelling that is not normally open for visitors.

Santa Fe artist to teach workshop

The Friends of the Art Library at the Durango Arts Center will present a workshop with Santa Fe artist Victoria Rabinowe from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. July 28-29.

The Saturday session will be “Dreams, the Doorway to Imagination and Creativity.” Sunday’s will be “Maze Books & Non-Linear Book Design.”

The cost for both days is $125 for DAC members, $150 for nonmembers; either single-day session costs $65 for members, $80 for nonmembers. There is a $10 materials fee, and a $50 deposit is required for registration.

Abshagen to unveil new work at Sorrel Sky

Landscape painter Sharon Abshagen will present new work July 5 at Sorrel Sky Gallery, 828 Main Ave., during July’s First Thursdays Art Walk. Abshagen will discuss her latest paintings from 5 to 8 p.m.

A Signature Member of the Plein Air Painters of Colorado, Abshagen recently won “Best of Show” from the Four Corners Commission at the Durango Arts Center and was featured on the cover of Sky West magazine. Her images of familiar landscapes are well-known and highly collected in the area.

Musician Robby Overfield also will play at the First Thursdays event. Upcoming First Thursdays artists will include McCarson Jones, Jim Bagley and Tony Newlin.
