Baptist church to hold flag dedication on July Fourth
First Southern Baptist Church will celebrate Independence Day with a flag dedication at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at 1715 West Second Ave.
The church will dedicate a World War II memorial flag donated by a church neighbor.
The church also will dedicate new, ground-mounted lighting designed to illuminate the flag.
Hot dogs, chips and drinks will be provided beginning at 6 p.m.
Buddhist teacher to speak Aug. 4-5
The Durango Dharma Center will present Lama Surya Das from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 4 at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College, and from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 5 at the Durango Dharma Center, 2530 Colorado Ave.
Das is a Buddhist teacher and author of the national best-selling book Awakening to the Buddha Within and Buddha Standard Time.
The concert hall event will feature a presentation, silent auction and book signing. The cost is $25 for adults and $18 for students and youth 18 and younger. The cost for the Dharma Center event is on a sliding scale of $40 to $70 for adults and $30 for students.

Har Shalom announces events
Congregation Har Shalom, 2537 County Road 203, will host these events:
Shabbat Morning Service will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the synagogue. The service will be with Eli Herb. Participants may bring lunch foods to share.
“Avodat Lev - Service of the Heart” will take place from 6:15 to 7 a.m. Wednesday.
A Kabbalat Shabbat and Oneg will take place from 7 to 7:20 p.m. Friday. The Shabbat will be lead by Eli Herb.
“Torah In the Mouth” will take place from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Friday. The community is invited to attend a series of classes on oral traditions and storytelling led by rabbinical student Maggid Elisha Herb. The event will include a free catered dinner.
