Wesley Bierma earns graduates from Parkland

Wesley T. Bierma of Durango recently earned an associate’s degree or a certificate from Parkland College in Champaign, Ill.

Bierma is among more than 830 graduates from Parkland’s fall 2011 and spring 2012 semesters.

Local to compete in finals rodeo

Cade Van Soelen, an eighth-grade home-schooled student, has earned a position on the Colorado State National Junior High Rodeo Team and will travel with teammates to compete in the eighth annual National Junior High Finals Rodeo on June 24-30 in Gallup, N.M. Cade will compete in the team roping competition.

The National Junior High Finals is the world’s largest junior high rodeo.

Jeremy Morris named to Memphis Dean’s List

Jeremy Morris of Durango was named to the Dean’s List at the University of Memphis for the spring 2012 semester.

The Dean’s List is made up of students who have 12 or more earned hours in the semester with a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale for that semester.

Humane society to hold K-9 Kamp

The Kids Kare K-9 Kamp will be held June 25-28, and the La Plata County Humane Society will hold one camp each month for the summer.

The participants will learn dog obedience training and grooming from Paws N’ Playtime. In addition, they will go in the surgery suite to watch a neutering procedure and learn why it’s important to have their pets spayed or neutered. They also will be educated about animal cruelty and neglect from animal protection officers.
