Bicycle accident on Colorado Trail sends one to Mercy

Flight for Life airlifted a 65-year-old man to Mercy Regional Medical Center on Sunday after he suffered an injury while mountain biking on the Colorado Trail, said San Juan County Undersheriff Kris Burns.

Three people from San Juan County Search and Rescue and 11 from La Plata County Search and Rescue responded after a call came in before noon Sunday, Burns said.

It was a great turnout for search and rescue, she said.

Nine people were deployed to the area, which crews accessed from Lime Creek Road, she said.

Burns said the man suffered lower-body injuries. She was unsure whether he was with other people at the time of the injury, but said there was only one patient.

The cyclist apparently fell down an embankment. He was airlifted out about 6 p.m., Burns said.
