Talk about town It’s all about those firefighters’ feet

Showing appreciation for firefighters during this severe drought season is easier than you might expect. For all the heavy and complicated equipment used to combat flames, one need is profoundly simple: a good pair of socks.

Elaine Ehlers, a local education consultant, was wondering how to help. She asked her son Ryan Ehlers, a firefighter with Durango Fire & Rescue Authority, for input: “Should we bring water? Should we bring food?”

The crews had plenty of those things already, he said, but ordinary socks deteriorate quickly under all the wear and tear of tromping around steep, smoldering hills.

“He didn’t even think twice (before answering),” Ehlers said.

Larger-size socks that extend above the calf and are made of durable, odor-resistant material – brands such as FITS, SmartWool, Thorlo and Keen – are preferred.

Donations to the “Sock It To Me” campaign can be dropped off inside the door at Crane Leake Ehlers Bruzzese & Ehlers PC, a law firm at 102 W. 18th St., across from J/P Tire.
