Atmos Energy warns of bill scam

Atmos Energy is warning customers about a scam that promises federal stimulus money to pay utility bills in exchange for vital personal data.

There is no such program and customers should never give personal information to anyone who is not an authorized utility agent, the company warns.

The scam involved Atmos customers receiving a phony bank routing number that supposedly had funds to pay past-due bills.

Atmos, which delivers natural gas to 12 states including Colorado, alerted customers about the scam in May but was receiving calls from customers as late as this week.

The same scam has been reported in Florida and North Carolina.

According to the Better Business Bureau, scammers have contacted customers in person and through social media, texting and fliers.

Atmos said its representatives always carry identification and never ask for personal data such as a Social Security number.

Customers who think their Atmos account has been affected may call (888) 286-6700.
