A small apartment fire reported earlier this month is the result of arson, authorities said Tuesday.
The fire occurred about 5:10 a.m. July 1 at 763 Animas View Drive.
There was no structural damage, but someone set fire to clothes and the carpet, said Investigator Brad Roach, with the Durango Police Department.
A newspaper carrier for The Durango Herald detected an odor of burning plastic and reported the fire, he said.
No one was inside the apartment at the time of the fire, but two adjoining apartments were occupied, Roach said.
Emergency responders knocked down the door of one apartment to rescue a man asleep inside, said Karola Hanks, spokeswoman for Durango Fire & Rescue Authority.
The fire caused “significant damage” to the apartment, Hanks said.
The Aztec Fire Department, which has equipment to detect whether accelerants were used, assisted with the investigation, she said.
She declined to say whether accelerants were used, citing the pending investigation.
Police have not identified any suspects, Roach said.
“We’re just following leads right now,” he said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Investigator Roach at 375-4738 or Crimestoppers at 247-2111.
