Longtime Ignacio resident Matilde Herrera died Saturday, July 7, 2012, at her granddaughter Toni Herrera’s home in Aztec. She was 95.
Mrs. Herrera was born to Fernando and Filia Gallegos on Sept. 21, 1916, in Lumberton, N.M.
On Sept. 5, 1937, she married Andres A. Herrera at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Durango. The couple celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1987, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Ignacio.
“She loved spending time with her family and with the many children that she took care of,” her family said. “A fifth-generation grandmother, she was known to everyone as “Grandma Herrera.”
A longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, she was a Carmelita.
Mrs. Herrera enjoyed crocheting and gardening.
“Matilde was a gentle soul with much love,” her family said.
Mrs. Herrera was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Andres A. Herrera; and son Andres V. Herrera.
She is survived by her son, Antonio P. Herrera, of Kirtland, N.M.; her niece, Noemi Duran, whom she raised, of Ignacio; 11 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, great-great-great-granchildren and great-great-great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. today, July 11, 2012, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 254 East Fifth Ave., in Durango. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 12, 2012, also at Sacred Heart. A reception dinner will take place after the service at the Parish Hall.
