Former Durango resident Gertrude W. Parsons died from complications of diverticulitis Thursday, July 5, 2012, at The Valley Inn in Mancos. She was 85.
Known as “Trudy,” she was born to Rudolph and Hermine Dorfer Walters on Feb. 22, 1927, in Philadelphia. She graduated from New Hope High School and spent 22 years as a secretary in the Navy and Naval Reserve in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.
She married James D. Parsons and was widowed when her son, Michael, was only 12.
Mrs. Parsons had lived in Durango since 2001.
“Trudy loved children and would regularly attend our son’s baseball and basketball games,” her friend Cathy McKnight said. “She made friends with the other parents and enjoyed watching their children as well. We will all miss our cheerleader. Trudy’s son Michael always said that his mom was the most thoughtful, kind and loving mom that anyone could have.”
Mrs. Parsons was preceded in death by her husband, James D. Parsons; and son, Michael J. Parsons, who died in 2009.
She is survived by her brother, Rudolph “Rudy” Walters, of Pennsylvania; and three nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday June 12, 2012, at First United Methodist Church of Durango, 2917 Aspen Drive.
