Tommy J. King

Former Ignacio resident Tommy J. King died Thursday, July 5, 2012, at his home in Aztec. He was 77.

Mr. King was born to Weaver and Jannie (Terry) King on May 16, 1935, in Tucumcari, N.M. When he was 18 months old, his family moved to Oxford. He and his father farmed and raised cattle there. Mr. King graduated from Ignacio High School in 1953.

In 1955, he met his future wife, Janneth “Sis” Baird, and after a two-week courtship, they married on Oct. 7, 1955, in Aztec. He called her “Ole Sweetie.”

Mr. King was a self-taught mechanic and ran gas stations, including the Ignacio Texaco, in Ignacio for more than 30 years. He later went to work in the oilfields for Knight Well Service until he retired in 2006.

He enjoyed hunting and camping.

Mr. King was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Janneth King.

He is survived by his daughters, Cheryl Batchelor of Durango, Brenda Boone in Bloomfield, N.M., and Dena McReynolds of Aztec; sister, Beth Sower, of Bayfield; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 14, 2012, at Aztec Baptist Church, 1219 S. Main Ave. Craig Durham will officiate.

A reception will take place after the service.
