Your Sister’s Sister. HHH In an interesting twist to the “friends with benefits” theme, a man sleeps with the lesbian sister of his best (girl) friend. Rated R.
Shut Up and Play the Hits. (Wednesday only; after-party with DJ Mister E) A documentary that asks “When you start a band, do you know how it will end?” In this case we follow the final 48 hours of LCD Soundsystem, including their last concert at Madison Square Garden, through the eyes of front man James Murphy.
(102 Fifth St. Next to the railroad depot, 247-8133)
Savages.HHH½ Two laid-back So-Cal pot growers resist advances by a vicious Mexican cartel. That makes them much less laid-back. Rated R.
Moonrise Kingdom. HHH½ A very well-received story of two 12-year-olds who fall in love on a New England island in 1965 and go missing during a big storm. Rated PG-13.
Durango Stadium 9
(Next to Durango Mall, 247-9799)
Ice Age 4: Continental Drift.HH (In standard and digital 3-D with surcharge) I’m not going to pretend like I know what happened in the first three. Surely there are those who do, and for them we present No. 4. Enjoy. Rated PG.
Katy Perry: Part of Me. (In digital 3-D with surcharge; no Ebert rating) If you’ve ever dreamed about going backstage with a vapid, overprivileged bubbleheaded pop star, wake up – it’s happening now. Rated PG-13.
The Amazing Spider-Man. HHH½ (In standard format and digital 3-D with surcharge) I’m doing some research to see why this is different from the one they just made 10 years ago that already has sequels and a Broadway version ... and I’ve got nothing. Rated PG-13.
Madea’s Witness Protection. (No Ebert rating.) Yes, they made another one. I’m sure there are plenty of people who are happy about that, none more so than Tyler Perry. Rated PG-13.
Magic Mike. HHH Young male strippers need mentors, too, and Channing Tatum shows a young up-and-comer the ropes, based on events from his own life. Rated R.
Ted. HHH½ Mark Wahlberg’s wish for his childhood teddy bear to come to life comes true. But this is a Seth MacFarlane film, so Ted is not a well-behaved companion. (See review this page) Rated R.
Brave.HHH Pixar dreams up a female protagonist in the form of arrow-firing Princess Merida, who brings some sort of doom to the kingdom by being uppity and then has to fix things by being brave. Hence the title. Rated PG.
Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted. (No Ebert rating) If you made two movies that earned you $1.1 billion, you’d probably make a third one, too. Rated PG.
