Ignacio library announces events

The Ignacio Community Library, 470 Goddard Ave. in Ignacio, will host these programs:

A class to make lavender sleep pillows and do yoga will take place at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Dave Mayeux from the San Juan College Planetarium will perform an “Adult Planetarium Show” at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Reservations are required.

A workshop about making and using flower essences will take place at 10 a.m. Aug. 4. Participants will learn how to make an all-purpose remedy and an atomizer bottle for spritzing. Reservations are required.

Historical society to offer youth camps

The San Juan Mountains Association and the La Plata County Historical Society will offer two youth day camps for ages 10 to 12 on Thursday and July 26.

At the Thursday camp, “Animas City Detective Agency,” campers will learn about the importance of Animas City and learn about its history.

At the July 26 camp, “If Headstones Could Talk,” campers will learn about archaeology and the Animas City Cemetery.

Registration deadlines are Tuesday and July 24. Each camp is $25 per child.

Counseling, claim filing assistance for veterans

The nonprofit Disabled American Veterans and the Harley-Davidson Foundation will host the Harley’s Heros Veteran’s Mobile Service Office from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 21 at the Durango Harley-Davidson, 750 South Camino del Rio.

The office will provide counseling and claim filing assistance. Coffee and donuts will be provided. This event is part of the nationwide Harley’s Heroes tour and is free to all veterans and members of their families.

Marvel Grange to offer ice cream social

Marvel Grange will host an ice cream social at 2 p.m. Sunday at the home of Pat and Lila Greer, 8097 County Road 100 in Hesperus.

If the weather is inclement, the event will be moved to the Marvel Grange Hall. Participants can bring homemade ice cream or a dessert.

Knights of Columbus to host benefit sale

The Durango Council No. 1408 of the Knights of Columbus will hold its eighth biennial garage sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and July 21 at the St. Columba School gym, 1801 East Third Ave.

The sale will feature furniture, appliances, books, toys, decorations and crafts. There will also be household, office, sports and yard items.

At 11:30 a.m. July 21, prices on remaining items will be reduced, and at 12:30 p.m., a $2 bag sale will begin.

All of the proceeds from the sale will be used by the Knights for council activities including charitable gifts to community groups and individuals.

Used-but-not-abused items will be accepted, other than televisions (unless digital), computers, mattresses and clothing.

Items may be dropped off at the St. Columba School gym during the afternoon or evening Wednesday or Thursday. Arrangements may be made to have large furniture or appliances picked up within a 10-mile area by calling Marv Giersch at 247-8242.

Food-preservation classes to be offered

Food-preservation classes will be available beginning July 30 with a hands-on class and a discussion class Aug. 1.

All forms of safe food preservation will be discussed, including equipment, techniques and options.
