Ignacio native Barbara Taylor Santistevan died Thursday, July 12, 2012, at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango. She was 79.
One of eight children, Mrs. Santistevan was born June 18, 1933, to Edwin and Ellen Box Taylor in Ignacio, where she grew up and attended schools.
She later met Sam Santistevan, whom her family called the love of her life. The couple were married and moved to California in the 1950s.
Mrs. Santistevan and her husband spent most of their lives in California, where Mrs. Santistevan worked as an aircraft detailer for McDonnell Douglas Corp. During their time in California, Mrs. Santistevan’s godson Dale Santistevan would drive from Ignacio for visits. The couple moved back to Ignacio in the mid-1990s after retiring.
Mrs. Santistevan was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church.
“She enjoyed spending her time playing Keno and taking care of and raising her great-nieces, Helania and Patricia Rose Taylor, as if they were her own children,” her family said. “She liked to eat out at all the area restaurants and enjoyed watching ‘Perry Mason,’ ‘CSI Miami’ and ‘Matlock’ whenever she could.”
Mrs. Santistevan was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Santistevan, in 1995, as well as a niece and a nephew.
She is survived by her stepsons Sam Santistevan of Bayfield and Dewayne Santistevan of Oklahoma; eight nieces; three nephews; a godson; and numerous other extended family members.
A family wake will be held Monday evening, July 16, 2012, at 815 Shoshone Ave. in Ignacio. A rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Monday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church. The Rev. Douglas Hunt will officiate.
Burial will occur at Ouray Cemetery in Ignacio, and dinner will be served after the burial at the Southern Ute Multipurpose Room.
