The Local Organizing Committee for the 2012 USA Pro Cycling Challenge will hold a community open house from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Thursday at the Rochester Hotel in Durango, 726 East Second Ave.
Community members can attend the event to meet Local Organizing Committee volunteers and learn more about the race and various race-related activities. Attendees can also enter to win USA Pro Cycling Challenge prizes and ask questions about the race.
“We know there are a lot of questions circulating about the Pro Challenge,” said committee co-chairwoman Sherri Dugdale in a news release. “The Open House is an opportunity for the public to come and have those questions answered, and to have some fun in celebration of such a big event taking place in our area of the world.”
Dugdale and committee co-chairwoman Mary Monroe will be guest bartending during the open house.
Durango will serve as the opening stage for the USA Pro Cycling Challenge, which runs seven days through 13 cities, with a finish line in Denver.
According to the committee’s news release, tourism officials expect 20,000 to 25,000 visitors and 150 media representatives to flood Durango during race weekend.
“The Pro Challenge is going to be economically very beneficial to southwest Colorado during race weekend and into the future due to this international TV exposure on NBC, NBC Sports and Euro Sport,” Monroe said in the release.
The four-day calendar of Durango’s race-related events will run from Aug. 16 to the opening stage on Aug. 20.
Opening ceremonies for the race will take place at 8 a.m. Aug. 20 in downtown Durango.
