Rescuers respond to injured cyclist

Rescue workers were attempting to reach a woman who became injured while mountain biking Wednesday on the Colorado Trail in the Junction Creek area.

La Plata County Search and Rescue officials learned of the accident about 3 p.m. They had her GPS coordinates and were trying to reach her as of 5:30 p.m., said Butch Knowlton, director of La Plata County’s Office of Emergency Management.

The woman’s identity and details of her injury were not immediately available. She was on a remote section of the Colorado Trail northwest of Durango.

A team of mountain bikers followed by medical personnel on foot were en route to assist her, Knowlton said.

A helicopter was being used to help survey the area and direct ground crews.
