As reported in the July 13 Herald, the children in Ignacio are fortunate to have a number of resources available to them that promote good health. Along with the programs at SunUte Community Center, the article highlighted activities at Southern Ute Montessori Head Start and Early Head Start, headed by Program Director Char Schank, and operated by Southern Ute Community Action Programs Inc.
This program has vigorously adopted healthy eating and activity strategies that have contributed to a 15 percent reduction in childhood obesity among the children who participate.
Members of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe may also choose to send their children to the Southern Ute Indian Montessori Academy, operated by the tribe. This is another program that consistently promotes the well-being of children through healthy behaviors.
