For 77 years, Durango Fiesta Days has marked the high point of summer in Southwest Colorado, bringing the community together to celebrate cowboy and cowgirl culture with a weeklong series of events. Each offers a taste of the heritage that is still a vibrant part of life in the region.
This year’s Fiesta Days kicked off Saturday with the queen contest and has been ramping up throughout the week with a smattering of events including Thursday night’s barbecue, pie auction and street dance on Main Avenue. The rodeo events will begin tonight at the La Plata County Fairgrounds and continue through Sunday.
Saturday will offer the fullest slate of events, beginning with a parade at 10 a.m. downtown and two rodeos – at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. – with a chuckwagon cook-off at 5:30 p.m. at the Durango/La Plata County Senior Center next to the fairgrounds.
Fiesta Days will wrap up Sunday with “cowboy church” at 9 a.m., a pancake breakfast at 10 a.m. and the final rodeo at 1 p.m.
There is much to take in at Fiesta Days, not least of which is the flavor of the Old West that continues to be an important component of Southwest Colorado’s identity. Enjoy the 77th annual Durango Fiesta Days and all that it offers the community and those visiting.
