See what 4-H members have been up to

“Sew it, Grow it, Show it!” The 2012 La Plata County Fair events will begin this weekend and will run through Aug. 12. The County Fair is always a great celebration of our community and 4-H youths. We are very proud of all the hard work and dedication our 4-H members have made this year.

The ARBA rabbit show and 4-H horse show will be Saturday. In addition, the 4-H Horse Gymkhana event will be held Sunday. Food and beverage concessions will be available this weekend. The proceeds from the concessions will go to support Ignacio FFA.

Monday and Tuesday will be big days for many of our 4-H members. On these days, we will host contests, quizzes, tests and 4-H home economics, natural resources and general projects judging and interviews. These events allow our members to complete their projects through positive evaluation methods.

The contests, such as Cake Decorating, Creative Cooks, Demonstration and Fashion Revue, allow our members to exhibit their learning in front of an audience. This really helps our members build strong presentation, public speaking and self-esteem skills.

Our quizzes and tests are designed to ensure our members are learning key concepts and knowledge of their project area. Finally, the judging and interviewing of our projects are essential to help our members articulate the goals they wanted to accomplish through doing a project.

Even though not every member can go home a Grand Champion, we are more focused in the 4-H program that every child goes home a Blue Ribbon youth. We want to see every child succeed to the best of his or her ability and encourage children to continue to grow into responsible, caring adults.

The official start of fair will be Wednesday. This is when the carnival opens, and all the animals and open-class projects will arrive. Our 4-H members will be participating in both small and large livestock shows in the covered pavilion. In addition, all our 4-H home economics, natural resources and general projects will be on display in the Extension Building. This is where you can view poster boards, cakes, woodworking, welding and many more fascinating 4-H projects our youths have done.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 10 and Aug. 11,, we will be having a 4-H Lego Robotics, Celebrating Community Norms and project demonstrations outside the Extension Building for the community to see all the unique opportunities the 4-H program offers in La Plata County.

As always, we are very excited to invite everyone down from noon to 5 p.m. Aug. 11 to support the 4-H Community BBQ Cook-off. WPX Energy, BP, Exterran and Rhino Technologies/Crossfire LLC will be our teams this year, cooking up the best barbecue of the summer. We thank the La Plata County Energy Council for this partnership and all our other sponsors for their kind donations. The menu this year will be beef and pork, salad, corn on the cob, bread, dessert and a drink. So get your presale tickets early to save some money. Tickets cost $8 for adults and $5 for seniors and children in advance and $10 the day of the barbecue. or 382-6463. Greg Felsen is La Plata County 4-H youth development agent.
