City man killed in accident

Ejected from pickup on Molas Pass

A 46-year-old Durango man was killed in a single-vehicle accident Wednesday afternoon.

“He was headed up Molas Pass and lost control,” Colorado State Trooper Jonathan Silver said about the crash, which was called in about 3:20 p.m. “Speed was a factor.”

Silver could not release the man’s name pending notification of next of kin.

The driver, who was headed toward Durango in a 2001 Chevrolet pickup, rotated counterclockwise and ended up more than 39 feet off U.S. Highway 550.

He was the only person in the vehicle and was ejected from the truck. The driver was not wearing a seat belt. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“It’s not like seat belts are a new technology,” Silver said. “But particularly in rural areas, people seem to think it’s an infringement of their constitutional rights to be required to wear them. Seat belt statistics in rural areas show that.”
