Police identify man killed in highway crash

By Jordyn Dahl Herald staff writer

The man killed in Wednesday afternoon’s car accident has been identified as Durango resident Sean Kirk.

Kirk, 46, was headed to Durango on U.S. Highway 550 when he lost control of the vehicle on a curve and rotated the truck counterclockwise before running off the right side of the highway, according to a Colorado State Patrol report.

The 2001 Chevrolet Silverado collided with an embankment, and Kirk was ejected from the vehicle. He was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Colorado State Patrol believes excessive speed played a role in the single-vehicle accident, which was called in about 3:20 p.m.

“He was headed up Molas Pass and lost control,” Colorado State Trooper Jonathan Silver said. “Speed was a factor.”
