Free backpacking trip to be offered

The San Juan Mountains Association, in partnership with the San Juan National Forest and Bureau of Land Management Tres Rios office, will offer a free backpacking trip Aug. 11 and 12 led by certified interpretive guide MK Thompson.

The trip will travel around the Four Mile Lake loop, a 12.4-mile loop in the San Juan National Forest. Optional side trips will explore peaks and other lakes. An optional informational meeting will precede the trip. Space is limited.

Orienteering races Aug. 11 in Pagosa

Upper San Juan Search and Rescue will host its inaugural orienteering race Aug. 11 in the Turkey Springs area off Piedra Road (County Road 600) near Pagosa Springs.

Three-hour (noon to 3 p.m.) and six-hour (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) races will be contested in individual and team categories in an area of the San Juan National Forest where plenty of free camping is available.

It will be a Rogaine format using map and compass in a scavenger-hunt type of event. A quick training will be provided for beginners before the event.

Entry fee is $49 per person; children younger than 10 will race free, and kids 11 to 17 and members of the Rocky Mountain Orienteering Club and USA Orienteering will receive a $5 discount. All proceeds will benefit Upper San Juan Search and Rescue.
