Rescue workers on Tuesday recovered the body of a person who suffered a fatal fall in the Chicago Basin area in the Weminuche Wilderness northeast of Durango.

The Durango 911 dispatch center received a report at 8:03 a.m. Tuesday that someone activated a personal location device on the south side of Chicago Basin and the north side of Columbine Pass, said Butch Knowlton, director of La Plata Countyís Office of Emergency Preparedness.

The emergency signal contained a GPS location, he said.

Rescue workers spent the day reaching the location by air and on foot, he said.

They located a group and recovered the body of the person, Knowlton said. He did not know how far the person fell, the victimís identity or gender. The person is not from this area, he said.

The body had been recovered as of 4 p.m. Tuesday.
