Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler said his office is working to keep business fees low and increase online usability.

Gessler visited with The Durango Herald’s editorial board Thursday morning to discuss how his office is serving businesses.

The office, which is in charge of business licensing and elections, has lowered five business filing fees, Gessler said.

He also said the website has been improved for user interaction. Also, password protection has been incorporated for all business accounts, which was established after a rash in business identity theft.

“We’ve been a leader in that,” Gessler said.

Uniform Commercial Code filings – documentation of business commercial transactions and sales and leasing of goods – will all be available online starting Memorial Day, Gessler said.

The Colorado Secretary of State office conducts usability testing on its website, People are brought in to search for filings, register to vote, and staff observes to see how user-friendly the website is and make changes accordingly, he said.
