Edward L. ‘Gus’ Hickman

Bayfield resident Edward L. Hickman died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012, at his home. He was 95.

Known as “Gus,” he was born to William and Mittie Hickman on July 3, 1917, in Cross Timbers, Mo. His family moved to Bayfield in 1920, and Mr. Hickman and his six siblings grew up there.

He met his future wife, Lois Robbins, in Bayfield, and the couple married in 1939 in Aztec.

In 1950, Mr. Hickman moved his family to Gunnison so he could attend barber school. Upon completing his certification, Mr. Hickman moved his family back to Bayfield, where he opened his barber shop on Mill Street. He was the only barber in Bayfield, and after 40 years, he moved the shop to his home and continued working for another 20 years.

After his wife, Lois, died, he married Mary Hayes in 2004 in Bayfield.

“He loved to reminisce with his customers with many grand stories,” his family said. “Ed loved to work outside in his yard and every year produced a variety of wonderful vegetables and beautiful flowers in his large garden.”

Mr. Hickman was preceded in death by his first wife of 62 years, Lois Hickman, in April 2001; second wife of six years, Mary Hickman, in July 2010; and infant son, Harlan Hickman.

He is survived by his daughter, Caroline Hickman, of Bayfield; sons Howard Hickman of Grand Junction and Harvey Hickman of Wickenburg, Ariz.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, at Hood Mortuary Chapel, 1261 East Third Ave. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012, at First Baptist Church, 560 Buck Highway (County Road 521) in Bayfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
