Delbert Duane Sutton

Former Durango resident Delbert Duane Sutton died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, in Willits, Calif. He had turned 74 three weeks earlier.

Mr. Sutton was born to Stanley and Geneva Sutton on July 21, 1938, in Durango. He grew up on the family ranch in Durango and graduated from Durango High School.

He lived and worked in Colorado, New Mexico, Hawaii, Arizona and California. Mr. Sutton started as a draftsman, worked as a civil engineer on major highways and bridges and ended his career as a well-respected construction manager, his family said.

He had been in the Colorado Army National Guard for 18 years, involved with the Elks in Yreka, Calif., and always a help to his friends and neighbors, his family said. He still enjoyed woodworking and his gardens.

Mr. Sutton was preceded in death by his son, Rodney Sutton, in 1988.

He is survived by his daughter, Rebecca Apthorp, of Reardan, Wash.; sister, Wilma Lynn, of Fruita; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 17, 2012, at Anker-Lucier Mortuary, 95 W. Commercial St., in Willits.
