Tour of Duty Ride to visit Durango

The Tour of Duty Ride will arrive on the outskirts of Durango at 10:30 a.m. today.

A welcome celebration for the riders will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the Durango Welcome Center, 1199 Main Ave.

The bicycle ride began in San Diego on Aug. 12 and will arrive in New York City on Sept. 10. The 24 cyclists are members of the military, law enforcement and fire service.

They are celebrating the men and women who serve, and in New York City, they will honor the victims of Sept. 11.

Yarn event, fashion show to be held in Bayfield

Knit One, Pearl Street, located on the corner of Mill and Church streets in Bayfield, will host these events:

A trunk show featuring Fiesta/Ironstone yarns will be held Friday and Aug. 25. There will be wine and appetizers. A fashion show will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 24.

The owner and sales representatives from Fiesta/Ironstone will visit the store Aug. 25 to help participants with patterns and answer questions.

AARP to host driver program in Silverton

AARP will host a driver safety program from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Silverton Town Hall, 1360 Greene St. in Silverton.

The program is free for people older than 50. Public Employees Retirement Association members and educators also are invited.

Space camp meeting to be held Aug. 26

4 Corners Space Camp will host an informational meeting and barbecue from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 26 at Santa Rita Park to recruit people ages 9 to adult who are interested in attending Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala., in June of 2013.

Library to host meeting to discuss landscaping

The Lavenia McCoy Public Library in Bayfield will host a community meeting with Walker Christensen of DHM Designs of Durango and members of the library’s Outdoor Spaces Committee to gather comments and hear ideas about a landscaping plan for the library at 7 p.m. Aug. 27 at the library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive.

The meeting is open to anyone with an interest in plants, xeriscaping, design and the library.

Iron Horse Chef finale to be held Aug. 25

The Iron Horse Chef Competition Finale will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 25 at the Durango Farmers Market, located in the parking lot of First National Bank of Durango on Eighth Street between Camino del Rio and Main Avenue.

Chefs Warren Smith of Manna Soup Kitchen and Dennis Morrisroe of Cosmopolitan Restaurant will compete. The chefs will have an hour and a half to shop and prepare dishes all at the farmers market. The winner will take home the traveling trophy, a competition jacket and the title.
