The Durango-La Plata County Airport will use a $525,000 federal grant to complete work on rehabilitating the parking area for commercial airplanes and for ground support equipment.
The airport will pay for 10 percent of the grant, or $57,750, from its revenue generated by charges to passengers’ tickets for facility repairs.
The Durango City Council and the La Plata County Board of Commissioners approved the grant from the Federal Aviation Administration last week.
The funding will pay for improvements to the parking area where the airlines load and unload passengers.
It will pay for the repaving and reimburse the airport for the cost of building a trench to drain the parking lot of a de-icing fluid during the winter, said Ron Dent, director of aviation.
The trench was built to prevent the fluid from contaminating the Animas River.
