’Hawks softball bolsters its bats

Fort Lewis adds Ashe to an already potent lineup

The Fort Lewis College women’s softball team already has a strong swing, but the Skyhawks are adding another player they hope will bolster the bats.

FLC head coach Kira Zeiter is adding Crean Lutheran High School’s Laura Ashe to a team which ranked fifth in the NCAA Division II in home runs per game with 1.25 in 2012.

“She has a positive attitude about the game and power from the plate. I expect for her to contribute those aspects to the team immediately,” Zeiter said in a news release to The Durango Herald.

Ashe, 5-7, was a three-year team captain and starter at catcher and first base for Crean Lutheran in Anaheim, Calif. She earned first-team all-league honors at first base in 2011 and at catcher in 2010 and second-team all-league at catcher in 2012.

She won the team’s most valuable player award in 2010 and 2012, as well as the coach’s leadership award in 2011.

Ashe is the Skyhawks’ sixth recruit, joining catcher/third baseman Tehenia Telliano of Reno, Nev.; pitcher Victoria Johnson of Bakersfield, Calif.; first baseman Nikki Klepfer of Santa Clarita, Calif.; and catcher/second baseman Joevanna Rios of West Covina, Calif.

FLC finished a program-best 30-26 last season, won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference postseason tournament and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament, just its second bid in program history.
